OpenAI now sells agents with engineers attached
On July 22 OpenAI announced Presence, a managed program in which enterprise agent deployments are led by OpenAI's own Forward Deployed Engineers and selected systems integrators. There is no self-serve option. Each engagement starts with a single job, such as a billing dispute or an insurance claim, and runs through a six-stage process covering scoping, security review, simulation testing, staged rollout, and post-launch iteration. Early customers include BBVA, SoftBank, and IAG, all still in design-partner or pilot stages, as AI News reported.
The reasoning behind the model is telling. Gartner has predicted that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be cancelled by end of 2027, mostly for governance and operational reasons rather than model capability. Federal agencies are deploying agents faster than they can secure them
A Booz Allen survey of more than 100 federal IT and cybersecurity decision makers, released July 21, found that 58% of agencies have deployed or are piloting AI agents, while only 28% expressed high confidence they can deploy them securely. That 30-point gap is the story. Commercial buyers face the same problem: adoption is easy to start and hard to govern. Vendors who can show identity controls, monitoring, and validation around their agents will win over vendors who can only show capability.
Alibaba builds a cloud architecture just for agents
At the World AI Conference in Shanghai, Alibaba Cloud launched Agent Native Cloud, an architecture built for running fleets of agents rather than single deployments. It includes AgentTeams for orchestrating multiple specialized agents, a sandboxed Agentic Computer for secure execution, and infrastructure with workload isolation and enterprise identity built in. Alibaba says 15 internal agents now handle 85% of its own developer support requests. When a major cloud vendor productizes agent fleets, the market moves another step from one-off prototypes toward repeatable, governed deployments.
Google's security agents graduate to general availability
Google moved its agentic capabilities in Google Threat Intelligence from preview to general availability for Enterprise and Enterprise+ customers. Analysts can now use natural-language queries to automate threat hunting, incident response, and alert triage, with inline citations back to the underlying threat data. The citation part deserves attention. A hyperscaler shipping production agents that show their work sets the verifiability bar buyers will start expecting from every agent vendor.
Kimi K3 is so popular its maker stopped taking signups
Days after releasing Kimi K3 on July 16, Chinese AI lab Moonshot AI paused new consumer subscriptions because demand was approaching the limits of its GPU clusters. The company plans to split future memberships into separate tiers, including a coding-only plan. For businesses picking an AI provider, this is a useful reminder that compute availability now shapes reliability as much as model quality does. A great model you cannot get served is not a great model for your workload.

The week's thread is accountability. OpenAI is attaching engineers to agents because deployments fail without them.
